Keep your expectations in check and if you aren't interested enough in the avatar you're making to go down a particular rabbit hole you find, then save that lesson for later. You'll hit roadblock after roadblock, and each one could be a rabbit hole of a concept to learn. To start, just focus on getting that model into Unity and uploaded to VRChat. Experiment with MMDs you find until you find one that seems to import relatively easily. Its ok to watch multiple videos about the same thing, one video may reveal something new that the other one didn't.ĬATS will let you import the MMD and will do a LOT of the heavy lifting for you. For Quest you want ideally below 7500 tris I believe, so that your avatar will show up without other Quest users needing to explicitly show your avatar. A lot of MMDs have highish poly counts (at least as far as VRChat goes). If someone marks an MMD as not to be edited don't use it without explicit permission! There's a lot of them on Deviantart and other sites. To get started, I would recommend looking for rigged MMD (MikuMikuDance) models. So its really exciting to have a fun excuse to learn such a potentially useful skill. Every VR experience will require people with these skills to create assets. And with VR growing I think the opportunities to use such skills will grow with it, even for things beyond gaming. If you ever were interested in videogame development it would be useful.
